Additives, some people swear by them. Others swear at them, so who's right? As a Certified Lubrication Specialist, I reveal the TRUTH about both Fuel and Motor Oil additives via laboratory testing and real world used oil analysis examples.
CORRECTION: The boiling point of Sea Foam is below 100C (I said Fahrenheit). The flash point is below 100F, which is what I meant to say.

More Zinc = More Wear? The REAL Truth About ZDDP Additives
Переглядів 215 тис.14 днів тому
Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate (AKA Zinc or ZDDP) provides anti-wear protection in motor oils, but the levels of Zinc has been reduced in motor oils over the last 20 years. Because of that, higher Zinc oils and high Zinc additives are now widely available, but is more Zinc actually better? Can you have too much Zinc? In this video, we worked with Southwest Research Institute, which is one of the l...
0W-8 Motor Oil: Too THIN to Trust? Let's Find Out!

How thin is 0W-8 motor oil? Toyota now calls for 0W-8 motor oil, which was only recently approved for use by the API. Can it actually protect the engine? Do Toyota dealerships actually install 0W-8 when they do the "free" oil changes? In this video, we put used oil analysis to work to get the answers to those questions, and the results are quite shocking! Speaking of thin oils, we also took a s...

LAB RESULTS: Does Motor Oil NEED To Be Shaken BEFORE Use?

What you see at the bottom of a 5 quart jug of Penzoil full synthetic anything after you perform an oil change will tell you whether or not you'd want to use Penzoil products agian. The last three oil changes I did on my own vehicles I noticed a fine black silt in the bottom of the jugs. Putting the cap back on the jug immediately after doing the service on the last two go arounds I let the empty jugs sit for a week then check the content after it has settled. The fine particulate I notice in the little bit of oil that settles is quite annoying.

While this would be helpful information to have, aren't you double dipping on this transaction? You are basically starting a database from a potentially huge pool of people with all different kinds of engines using different kinds of oils. This would be an incredibly lucrative database if sold to oil manufacturers.

I just finished watching a video on Daves Auto Center and he got the chance to talk to one of the guys who specializes (and creates a lot of formulas) in oil and he recommended to put additives into your oil and fuel based on where you live. The US doesn’t use enough additives so its highly recommended here. But also do it correctly. Read the bottle.

IN terms of old motor oil being bad for the engine, it still might have a good use in terms of using the old/expired oil on garden hand tool wooden handlers. For example using the old oil to preserver wooden handles of shovels, rakes, picks etc. or using the old/expired oil to preserver wood fences. I heard this from Google and from YouTune videos. It actually works and it a good cost effective alternative. By the way, great work with your video and tests... keep up the great work mate!

Oil deceased dinosaur juice , but seriously yes fuel injector cleaners that's a given, changing the quality and structure of oil in a motor the heart of ones vehicle? Just change it and the filter at regular intervals tis not rocket science good people. May I say flushing with a de mucker before an oil change yes but for the average driver don't dilute or play with the life blood of the motor.

I might also add, love your bottle funnel, it's the same what I have and works a mint... also store it the same way as mentioned... clean it before each us (same as cleaning around the oil hole in the rocker cover on each fill). I also want to add a non comparable comparison but somewhat similar... when using a pressure washer, it is best to run water through the pressure wand before turning on the pressure washer on. This gets rid of air bubbles which can damage the pump. Somewhat similar to the 'filling the oil filter' as supposed to not filling an oil filter.

You got my thumbs up on all videos I've watched and a subscribe too. There are many things I like about your videos, the filming, the editing, the amount of time taken to create each test, oil lab tests and more importantly using science, proper testings of oil done by independant lab to prove speculations right or wrong. Keep up the good work mate. As a side note, hatters gonna hate (can't change a mules way of doing things) and people who were previously in doubt or did not know about this, have proof and know how to do it right.

This is a NOTHING Question... If you can fill because the filter is upside down, or there is a housing tat can be filled... do so... if the filter cannot be filled, don't worry. If you are really worried and have a modern car, use the flat throttle method to turn your injectors off stopping the car from starting for a dozen cranks if you want to prime the oil systems first. The one thing no one should ever do... in other words DO NOT... is to rev the engine for a handful of seconds after the first engine start after an oil change, unless you have absolutely primed the whole oil system.

I would be very interested in your opinion of the "Engine restorer" product from Ametech. I have used it to some success in the past to reduce the signs of compression loss in several engines, but I have only ever stripped down one of those engines afterward, and that was a rotary engine so a rather uncommon application. If you're interested in doing so, I believe your analysis and investigation would be quite enlightening.

Okay….yah the only additives I ever use are marvel mystery oil, Lucas, and reseal 201 and it’s only when an engine has sat for a long time for first couple of start ups and then I’ve always flushed that oil after a handful of hours of running the engine because I assumed it was diluting the base oil to a certain degree……interesting to see this back that hunch up. I still don’t see a big reason not to use those particular additives for specific reasons such as helping rings get set correctly after sitting for a long time, if the only downside is that it shortens the life of the base oil…….which yah….if you are working on a vehicle and you think you need additives, it makes sense that you definitely shouldn’t be planning to run oil for over 6,000 miles in that engine.

This is the best piece of advice this channel has given. But to support the early 500 mile, or maybe even up to 1000 miles max... this early oil change interval, should be followed up with all oil changes being at 5000 miles for people who do normal start stop commuting style driving. Long interval service periods are simply there to save the manufacturer costs.

Marvel mystery oil is great for old engines thats sat for a long time. Pull the plugs, pour some into the cylinders. It helps things start up smoothly when rings or cylinder walls may have corrosion, or at the least are bone dry. Thats the only way I use it. Kerosene and atf mix works too. With both, be sure to change the oil as soon as you get things running good.

I never used Sea-foam in the oil because I didn't need to clean deposits from my engine and also didn't want to thin my oil out. Sea-foam is very low viscosity stuff. Although, I did have problems with my injected high performance motorcycle building up a sludge in the intake ports and throttle plates and deposits on the intake valves. The stuff was so thick and sticky that the throttle would stay open when you release the throttle grip. That's a little scary when you have a 175 hp motorcycle. Anyway, I started using Sea-foam in the fuel, after about a month I removed the air box and could look straight down the throttle bores and see that everything below the injector in the direct spray of fuel was spotless and even the throttle plates and shafts were clean as can be. So I understand exactly what he was saying about additives for the fuel. I'm a believer in Sea-foam for that reason but never took much stock in the claims they make of it being a cure all, fuel treatment, oil treatment, and I think they even claim it works in transmissions.
